2002
U.S. Nationals
By Larry Hodges
The "BIG" events, to most people, are Men's and Women's Singles & Doubles - all four starting on Thursday. However, there's a lot more going on here at the 2002 USA Nationals. There are 60 events in all - that means 60 finals, 60 National Champions!
732 players will be competing for four days on 90 tables on 250,000 square feet to establish who these 60 National Champions will be. Besides the "Big Four," there are numerous age events (from the Cadet Under 15 Team Trials to Over 80), rating events (from Under 1000 to Under 2400, using the USATT rating system), rating doubles events, hardbat events (no sponge!), and disabled events (such as wheelchair or standing disabled).
There are seven Finals on Wednesday, Day One of the USA Nationals. They are the three rating doubles events, Over 60 Men's Doubles, Men's Class Singles (Wheelchair/Standing Disabled), and Men's and Women's Wheelchair Singles. The three rating events are Under 4200, 3700 and 3200 Doubles, where the two players combined rating must be under the cutoff. All seven finals take place on Wednesday night. Results of these events will go online shortly after at the Nationals Results Page.
A special thanks goes to the Sponsors and Staff of this tournament - without them, there would be no tournament!
