Seven of these eight matches were pretty straightforward:

The only contested match this round was U.S. Team Member Simone Yang (2329) vs. U.S. #3 junior girl Katherine Wu (2155). Nearly every point was a countering battle, with Wu pressing the attack most rallies, and Yang blocking and keeping the ball in play. The rallies were long and vicious, and every game was close. In the end, experience and sheer steadiness won out over speed and quickness, and Wang wins, 7,-8,7,-8,8,9.

The quarterfinal match-ups (to be played tonight) are as follows:

There were a number of wild matches in this round. If you looked away for a moment, you would miss quite a bit! The scores tell the stories, with the more interesting results in bold. In the end, with all the long battles, there were only two upsets: 2410-rated Adam Hugh's long battle over Sean Lonergan (2514), and 2247-rated Jared Lynch's incredible comeback (from down 0-3) against Young Ren (2316).

The round of 16 match-ups (to be played tonight) are from top to bottom above, i.e. Lupulesku vs. O'Neill, etc.
