U.S. Open By Larry Hodges
All players were distributed into 20 RR groups, mostly with three per group, with one advancing to the final draw. Ten USA junior boys were in the event. Much of the seeding was done by estimates, so some of the seedings were erratic. Only one USA boy advanced - Mark Hazinski.
Here is how the USA juniors did:
Mark Hazinski was the only USA junior seeded #1 in a group. He won both of his matches and advanced. He defeated the second seed easily, Guo Peng of Canada, at 3,4,4. He had a battle with the third seed, Lee Yu-Kai of Chinese Taipei, but won out in five, 7,-7,-8,6,8.
Han Xiao was seeded second in his group of four, and came in second. He defeated the third and fourth players: Lee Jih Shenz of Chinese Taipei (3,5,4) and Huang Chien-Yuan, also of Chinese Taipei (9,-6,3,6), but lost to the top seed, Faazil Kassam of Canada, -8,9,8,8. Xiao had defeated Kassam the previous day in the ITTF Pro Tour preliminaries to advance; this time it was Kassam to advance.
Adam Hugh was seeded second in his group, but came in third. He lost to the top seed, Zolt Sel of Yugoslavia, -10,8,3,7. He lost to the third seed, Lin Xin Nan of Chinese Taipei, -7,6,7,8.
Tse Ka-Chun was seeded third in his group, but came in second. He lost to the top seed, Su Chu-Yong of Chinese Taipei, at 3,8,-7,6. He defeated the second seed, Jorge Szenfeld of Chile, 9,-8,7,8.
Auria Malek was seeded third, but came in second with an "upset" win. He lost to top-seed Chou Tung-Yui of Chinese Taipei, 9,3,5. He then defeated the second seed, Ignacio Cabrera of Canada, 7,9,-8,10.
Jared Lynch was seeded third. He lost to the top seed, Su Chu-Chao of Chinese Taipei, at 1,5,3. The second seed, Sheldon Myers of Jamaica, lost to Su as well, but defaulted for reasons unknown to Lynch, so Lynch came in second.
Anthony Liu was seeded third in his group, and lost both matches. He lost to the group's top seed, Yuki Morita of Japan, at 3,5,-7,6, and to the second seed, Yu-Chen Chou of Chinese Taipei, at -7,3,1,5.
Eric Leventhal was seeded second in his group, but came in third. He lost to the top seed in the group (and tenth seed overall), Tseng Chun-Yuan of Chinese Taipei, at 5,6,3. He lost to the third seed, Sorin Petro of Yugoslavia, at 3,2,7.
Alden Fang and Min-Vu Nguyen, both USA players, seeded second, were in the same group for some reason (the only two USA players grouped together). Both lost to the top seed, Jiang Jia-Ei of Chinese Taipei, the third seed in the event. Fang lost at 4,2,11, and Nguyen at 4,2,4. Fang defeated Nguyen in close match, -5,8,11,-6,6.
In the single elimination draw, Hazinski will play Huang Wei-Chin of Chinese Taipei (seeded sixth in the event) in the 8ths.
All players were distributed into 11 RR groups, mostly with three per group, with one advancing to the final draw. Ten USA junior girls were in the event. Like in the junior boys' event, much of the seeding was done by estimates, so some of the seedings were erratic. Three USA girls advanced - Katherine Wu, Chao "Kathy" Wang and Veronica Birikouva, with Wang and Birikouva advancing with wild card spots, and Wu the only USA player to advance in first place in her group.
Here is how the USA juniors did:
Katherine Wu was seeded second in her group, and the third player didn't show. She defeated the top seed, Su Hsien Ching of Chinese Taipei, 9,-6,-5,10,7, and advanced in first place.
Chao "Kathy" Wang was seeded second in her group, but the third player didn't show. She lost to the top seed, Japanese star and top seed Ai Fukuhara, 9,9,4, but advanced with a wild card spot.
Veronica Birikouva was seeded second in her group, but the third player didn't show. She lost to the top seed, Sugita Sanae of Japan, 2,8,5. However, she advanced with one of the wild card spots.
Whitney Ping was seeded first in her group of four, the only USA player seeded first. She defeated the fourth player, Vanessa Petroj of Yugoslavia, 7,2,-5,4, and defeated the third player, Guadalupe Gomez Sanchez of Peru, -8,5,3,6. However, she lost to the second seed, Mariany Nonaka of Brazil, 8,7,4, and so didn't advance.
Jackie Lee was seeded second in her group of four, and came in second. She defeated the fourth seed, Sara Yuen of Canada, 4,7,-3,7. She then came from behind to win a wild match with the third seed, Alicia Guerrero of Peru, -8,-8,7,14,9! She lost to the top seed, Nathalia Barreira of Brazil, 3,-6,6,10.
Sophia Yi was seeded second in her group, and came in second. She lost a very close match to the top seed, Chiu Wennin of Canada, -10,7,4,-10,6. She defeated the third seed, Marisol Delzo of Peru, 3,8,-9,3.
Victoria Birikouva was seeded third in her group, but came in second. She lost to the top seed, Hirano Sayaka of Japan, 4,6,7. She defeated the second seed, Sara Abdelaziz of Egypt, 7,-5,-9,9,5.
Elaine Kwok was seeded second in her group, but came in third. She lost to the top seed, Huang Yi-Hua of Chinese Taipei, at 3,5,10. She lost to the third seed, Paulina Vega of Chile, at 6,10,10.
Judy Hugh was seeded second in her group, but the third player didn't show. She lost to the top seed, Kumi Imafuku, at 5,4,7.
Laura Leach was seeded second in her group, and finished second. She lost to the top seed, Midori Ito of Japan, the third seed in the event, at 7,3,5. She defeated the third seed in the group, Angela Ruz of Chile, at 7,2,9.
In the single elimination draw, in the round of 16, USA players will be paired up as follows:
Veronica Birikouva will play Sayaka Hirano of Japan, the 7th seed in the event.
Chao "Kathy" Wang will play Huang Yi-Hua of Chinese Taipei, the 4th seed in the event.
Katherine Wu will play Miriany Nonaka of Brazil.
