USA's Chang Jun Gao
USA's Chang Jun Gao made the Quarterfinals of Women's Singles, where she lost to Tamara Boros of Croatia (world #5). Gao had beaten Boros the last time they'd played, at the World Cup last year, but this time lost, -9,1,-9,11,7,-2,6. Gao led 10-9 in the fourth, threatening to go up 3-1, but lost that game 13-11.
Gao is the first USA player to reach the quarterfinals in singles at the Worlds since Dick Miles in 1959. (Dan & Rick Seemiller made the quarterfinals of men's doubles in 1977, and Eric Boggan made the final 16 in men's singles in 1983.)
