USATT
ran a coaching seminar at the Nationals in Friday night from 8:30-10:45. Running
and organizing the seminar were National Coaching Chair John Allen; USATT
Technical Director Ben Grigore; and USA Men's Coach Dan Seemiller. Attending the
seminar were 37 coaches, including "special guest" Zoran Kalinic,
coach of the Yugoslavian team and 1983 world men's doubles champion.
Attendees ranged through all the levels of coaching, including club, state, regional and national level coaches. All attendees were given a thick stack of coaching materials.
The seminar started with John explaining the new USATT Coaching Certification System. There was also discussion of other materials on the new USATT Coaching Page.
Dan Seemiller and Ben Grigore then led the group in discussions of various techniques and tactics, focusing on:
USATT President Sheri Pittman also gave a presentation on USATT's goals, and how they related to coaches. There then followed an open discussion of various topics. It was a perfect opportunity for coaches to bring up various coaching questions that they face. The only limiting factor was time. There will be more time at the upcoming coaching seminar at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Feb. 11-13 - but that one's already full. Seminars such as these will improve the level of coaching in the U.S., so if you are a coach, you should strongly think about attending future ones. (Future seminars will be posted in the news section at the USATT Coaching Page.)
