U.S. Open Day Five: Sunday, July 9 Report
By Larry Hodges
The ITTF Pro Tour is over, but there was one more day of U.S. Open events - mostly junior events. Many of the Pro Tour players spent the day at poolside, at the beach, or playing golf.
Puerto Rico's Santiago Coste - who has trained extensively in Maryland and California - won Under 14 Boys' Singles over Sheng-Yen Lin of Taiwan, 13 & 10. Coste had also made the finals of Under 16 Boys' Singles - altogether, a pretty good tournament for the 13-yeor-old!
Whitney Ping, who had already won Girls' Under 16 Singles, added Girls' Under 14 Singles to her titles, defeating Tsai-Ching Tseng of Taiwan, 16, -18, 15.
Andrew Lin defeated Brian Lam in an all-Florida Under 10 Boys' Singles final, 11 & 17.
Taiwan's Chia-Chia Hsiao defeated USA's Amy Huang in the Under 10 Girls' Singles final, 19 & 14.
Mark Hazinski and Howard Lamb decided they hadn't won enough events already, and teamed up to win Under 16 Doubles over Adam Hugh and Yin Wang, 12 & 15. 15-year-old Hazinski had already won Under 16 Boys' Singles, and made the final of Under 18 Boys' Singles and Under 2600. 14-year-old Lamb had won Under 2100.
Andrew Cochran defeated Johana Garcia in the Under 1650 final, 13 & 15. Cochran had survived a 5, -19, 19 semifinal with Martin Pelletier.
Under 1800 Seniors was won by Ralph Kernizan over Wesley Greaves, 19 & 15.
13-year-old David Landry, who had already won Under 1175, added (as many had predicted!) Under 1000 Singles to his trophies, over Kevin Rodriguez, 10 & 6.
