Washington TTC
Coach
Wang Chen and owner/founder Li Tsang.
Li Tsang, one of the principals
of an environmental consulting firm, realized that he needed to be actively
involved with sports at his forty-plus age. He first returned to badminton,
which he had played years before. After a few months of playing at a badminton
club in New York City, he realized that it was tough for him to play at the
intensity and level that he possessed twenty years ago.
He then turned his attention towards table tennis, a sport he also played
before college.
Verdon
Tsang hits with Coach Wang Chen.
He
visited and played at a few table tennis clubs in the greater New York City
metropolitan area. He discovered two major areas of improvement are necessary at
most of table tennis clubs: 1) The
club’s environment, and 2) The lack of
youth programs. In comparison to
the clubs of other sports, conditions at existing table tennis clubs are ranked
the worst of all, and participants are primarily adults.
Li believes that table tennis players deserve a playing environment as
good as players of other sports. More importantly, he believes that it is
critical to establish long-term youth programs in clubs – the best way to
increase the number of players in the United States.
Driven by his beliefs, Li decided to create his own table tennis club. He
converted the entire ground floor of his building located at Port Washington, NY
into the Port Washington Table Tennis Club (PWTTC), the best equipped club that
can be found in the area – with 4000 square feet of club area, eight tables,
hardwood flooring, gym wall padding, lockers, and shower.
For the youth program, PWTTC partnered up with the Wang Chen Table Tennis
Academy (WCTTA) and created various youth training programs at the club.
WCTTA is operated and head-coached by Ms. Wang Chen, a former Chinese
National Team member, ranked fourth in the world in the late 1990s, and
currently ranked #2 in the U.S.
