Coney Island Avenue in Brooklyn, NY is a great place to hang out. Near Avenue J there are some great restaurants. De Tran and I usually drive in from Queens on Thursdays.
Our destination, however, is not Avenue J. It’s Avenue H. We do stop along the way on Avenue P to get some really good Sushi, finally ending up at the best place to play Table Tennis in New York City: Nison and Lazar’s Brooklyn Table Tennis Club.
The club is located in a very nice building, between Foster Avenue and Avenue H on Coney Island Avenue. The floors have been redone and a drop ceiling put in as well. The space is great, the Stiga Tables are great, but what’s even better is the competition.
First off you have Nison Aronov, sponsored by Table Tennis Pioneers. Nison, rated 2438, is really tough to beat. Just ask U.S. team member Han Xiao, who Nison barely got away from deuce in the 5th game at the 2004 Baltimore Teams. Nison plays a great control and touch game. His backhand block is amazing and he is the best lobber in the country.
When Nison’s Brother Lazar coaches him, Nison is even tougher to beat as is the case during the Thursday leagues. All the best players from NYC participate in the league. It’s open to players of all levels and a great way to improve.
