
Dec 17, 2003, Hong Kong - USA's Gao Jun, currently ranked #23 in the world, pulled off two major upsets to reach the quarterfinals of the Women's World Cup. Sixteen of the best women in the world were seeded into four groups of four, with the top two in each group advancing to the quarterfinals.
First, in the bigger shocker, she upset reigning world champion, and currently world #2 Wang Nan of China, -8,7,15,-8,8,9. After winning 4,3,2,2 against Canadian chopper Chris Xu (world #147), she went up against Tamara Boros, world #8. Gao had defeated Boros at the World Cup one year ago, but lost to her in the quarterfinals of the World Championships. Both matches had gone seven. This time, Gao wins 4-0, 4,10,10,7.
In the quarterfinals, she lost to Mihaela Steff of Romania, world #15, 4-1, with all four losses in deuce: -5,14,10,10,10.
