Coach of
the Year: Lily Yip
Lily is the USA Cadet Girls Team
Coach, and traveled extensively around the world with the team in 2004. In ITTF
Junior Circuit tournaments, the team had gold medalists in doubles and
semifinalists in singles, and finished 4th at the World Cadet Challenge in
Portugal in October. She is a full-time coach in New Jersey, and also runs USATT
tournaments. She is certified as a national coach, the highest level. Among her
students are her son and daughter, Adam (16) & Judy Hugh (15), both the best of
their age in the country, as well as Da Tang, the top ranked 10-year-old in the
U.S. Judy finished sixth at the World Cadet Junior Challenge. Adam was a
member of the 2003 U.S. National Team. Lily was inducted as a player into the
USATT Hall of Fame in December, 2004, and was elected USATT vice president in
November.
Developmental Coach of the Year: Dennis Davis
Dennis has been the head coach at the Palo Alto TTC for the past 14 years. He
was the 2003 USA Junior Boys Team Coach, and is certified as a national coach,
the highest level. Players he coaches include Jackie Lee (2004 USA women's
national team, under 22 women's champion and women's semifinalist), Auria Malek
(2004 Junior National Team), Trevor Runyan (2004 Junior National Team), Colleen
Lee (#10 in Under 16 girls), Ariel Hsing (#1 in under 10 girls), Lily Zhang (#3
in Under 10 girls), and Felicia Wang (#5 in under 10 girls). He chairs the USATT
NCAA Committee focused on making table tennis an "emerging sport" for women in
the NCAA.

Counsilman Science Award: Richard McAfee
Richard is a strong advocate of table
tennis robots, and regularly writes online articles on robot usage. He uses a
"spin wheel" to teach spin theory and help students develop spin strokes. He is
a full-time coach who recently relocated from Atlanta to Aurora, Colorado. He
was the 1999 Developmental Coach of the Year, is an ITTF/IOC Olympic Solidarity
Coach, and is certified as a national coach, the highest level.
Volunteer Coach of the Year: Greg Miller
Greg has been president of the Minnesota TT Federation since 1999, and was head
coach of the Minnesota Junior Olympic Team in 2001, 2003 and 2004. In 2004,
Minnesota junior players won 23 medals at the Junior Olympics, including 9 golds.
He is involved in all aspects of the Minnesota junior program, as well as many
other areas of Minnesota table tennis.
Selection of the four coaches was based on criteria published in the Coach of the Year Applications. Congratulations to these four coaches!
