As some have noted, the U.S. Olympic Trials recently moved to Penn State University (from Univ. of Pennsylvania). USATT Executive Director Doru Gheorghe explained the reason:
"We [USATT officials] met with University of Pennsylvania representatives on Monday, November 3, 2003, to inspect the facilities and to discuss their bid to host the Olympic Trials. The hall that was scheduled to accommodate the trials was found to be less than suitable for this event. There were obstructions (pillars) and large windows in the playing area. If we could have changed the dates of the Trials to January 6-11, 2004, University officials were prepared to make the gymnasium available. However, the dates of the event were approved as part of the Olympic Team Selection process, and could not be changed. I am, however, delighted to inform you that Penn State University has agreed to host the Trials at the established time in University Park, Pennsylvania. Penn State looks forward to welcoming the elite USTTA athletes to Happy Valley in January!"
