2004 World Cadet Challenge

USA’s best cadet (under 16) players were at the World Cadet Challenge in Portugal, where they were able to match their skills against the world’s best. Making the trip were USA players Judy Hugh, Barbara Wei, Jeff Huang and John Leach, and Coach Lily Yip.

Highest USA singles finisher was Judy Hugh, who finished 6th overall in the Cadet Girls’ Competition, with the key match her upset of her preliminary group #1 seed and overall #6 seed Misako Wakamiya of Japan, 7,-8,-10,10,9. Judy combined with Shirley Yan of Canada to also finished 6th in Girls’ Doubles. Other USA singles players were Barbara Wei (12th), Jeff Huang (23rd) and John Leach (27th).

USA and Canada combined for a North American Team, with the girls finishing third (behind China, Europe and Asia), and the boys seventh.
