USA Table Tennis Doubles Selection Procedure

for 2000 Olympic Games

The following selection procedure will take place as soon as possible after the completion of the North American Olympic Trials (Singles) with Canada.

Each of the U.S. competitors in the North American Olympic Trials (Singles) will submit to the applicable coach a rank-ordered list of his/her three best doubles partners. This list will be confidential and will not be disclosed in any way by any participants in this process. The coaches' recommendation to the National Team Committee will be from this list.

The coaches (National Women's Team Coach for the women and National Men's Team Coach for the men) will recommend the doubles pairings (or the single doubles selection in the case of splitting the doubles allocation with Canada) to the National Team Committee for approval or rejection. If the National Team Committee rejects the recommendation, the coach will submit another recommendation for approval or rejection.

The coaches will consult broadly with athletes, former athletes, and others in reaching these recommendations. They will use the following criteria for making their recommendations:

1. Most important, but not decisive, will be the order of finish in the North American Olympic Trials (Singles) and the athletes' rank-ordered list submitted to the applicable coach.

2. The history of the athletes' performance in doubles in international events, national championships, and other "national level" tournaments.

3. The availability of the athletes for Olympic Doubles Trials and Olympic training.

4. The coaches' professional estimate of the athletes' Olympic doubles performance potential.

If any member of the National Team Committee is among the athletes available for selection, that athlete's position on the National Team Committee for this purpose will be filled by another active or former athlete chosen and announced before this selection process by the Chair of the National Team Committee.

The National Team Committee may make its decision by telephonic consultation and need not meet, in person or by telephone, in order to make its decision. All members will be consulted.
