1999 Coach of the
Year
For 33 years, Teodor Gheorge has participated in all phases of the sport, including coaching, playing and administration.
In 1998, he was hired as USA Table Tennis National Women’s Team coach. Under his guidance, the USA women claimed gold medals in both singles and team competitions at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnepeg, Canada. Gheorghe also coached and trained with table tennis athletes at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Gheorghe also served as USATT National Women’s Team Coach at the 1999 North American Championships held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in July. With Gheorghe’s coaching, one of the team members, Gao Jun, won the North American Women’s Singles. She and another teammate, Amy Feng, won the title of North American Women’s Doubles Champions.
Gheorghe was employed as general secretary at the Romanian Table Tennis Federation in Bucharest from 1990 to 1997. His responsibilities included administration, coaching, player development, umpire development and testing, and maintenance and development of an extensive club network. He taught table tennis curricula at the coaching school of the Academy of Physical Education and Sports, which is the national coaching school for all sports in Romania.
As a player, Gheorghe competed on the Romanian National Team for more than a decade as both a junior and as an adult. During his tenure, he played in more than 100 international tournaments, including four World championships, three European championships and fifteen Romanian national titles.
In 1997, Gheorghe earned his ministry of sports from the Coaching School in Bucharest, Romania. He achieved a Level One Coaching Certificate for Table Tennis, which is the highest level attainable for the degree. He also holds a degree in economic science from the University of Craiova in Romania.
Gheorghe resides in Davison, Michigan, with Emilia Ciosu, a former top world table tennis athlete, and their son.
