Doru Gheorghe New USATT Executive Director

April 4, 2003 -  The USATT Board of Directors today voted 8-4 to promote USA Women's Coach Doru Gheorghe to the position of Executive Director for USA Table Tennis, effective April 8. Doru, 50, was the General Secretary for seven years for the Romanian Table Tennis Association (which is the equivalent to Executive Director in USATT). He moved to the U.S. several years ago to accept a position as the U.S. Women's Coach. The motion was made by President Sheri Pittman, and seconded by Tawny Banh. (For specific votes on the motion, see the USATT Minutes.)

President Pittman and Bob Allshouse, the Director of Oakbrook Training Center, have negotiated a termination of the Oakbrook contract that will save USATT about $85,000.  The contract termination will enable Doru to relocate to USATT headquarters in Colorado Springs.  When asked how soon he would move with his family to USATT Headquarters in Colorado Springs, he said as soon as possible - within a couple of weeks or so. Doru, who speaks fluent English, will continue to be the Women’s National Coach. He is a former member of the Romanian National Team, and has spent many years as a coach.

Doru replaces current USATT Executive Director Clark Mitchell who announced his resignation on March 18, effective April 7. He cited his desire to stay in San Diego to focus on the potential Chula Vista Olympic Training Center.
