Dell Sweeris has been named the new president of the USATT Foundation, succeeding the late Jimmy McClure. Sweeris will also serve as the Foundation Representative to the USATT Board.
The USATT Foundation, which is independent from USATT, was set up after the 1984 Olympics to safeguard and allocate windfall money from those Olympics, over $1,000,000. A portion of the income from this money (interest, dividends, etc.) goes to USATT.
Sweeris is a member of the USATT Hall of Fame (see his profile). He comes from a family of table tennis players, including fellow Hall of Famer Connie Sweeris (see her profile), and son Todd Sweeris, a member of the 1996 & 2000 USA Olympic Teams. USATT President Sheri Pittman said, "For decades the Sweeris family has made significant contributions to, and sacrifices for, USA Table Tennis. Dell brings with him a wealth of not only real-world business knowledge, but just as importantly a long history of elite playing and coaching performance. I remember as though it were yesterday when current Men's Coach Dan Seemiller, then a long-shot hopeful, trained under Dell for several months prior to the upcoming team trials. There Seemiller swept the trials, finishing first! It's a rare individual who has the potential to contribute so much due to his background. On behalf of fellow Board members, we heartily welcome Dell!"
Sweeris said of the USATT Foundation, "We're just going to continue to build on the foundation that Jimmy built."
Other Foundation officers include Vice President Neil Smyth, Treasurer Y.C. Lee, and Secretary Pam Ramsey. Californians Tom Miller, Terry Timmins and Carl Danner were also appointed to fill Foundation vacancies, joining current members Shonie Aki and Stanley Malless.
