In all, 53 entrants from clubs in
New York state and Erie, Pa., arrived for the tournament, including nine
first-time USATT players, nine juniors and four women. They fought for $490 in
prize money, with the Open champion receiving $150, in Syracuse Table Tennis
Club’s outstanding downtown facility.
Rochester’s Ray Mack clinched the
Open title, defeating Syracuse’s Harry Hawk in a five-game battle applauded
often from the stands. Other players will be boosting their ratings after
making memorable appearances at the tournament. Binghamton’s young star Brad
Colas (1027) in the U-1800s gave his best to finish second, vanquishing players
rated 1164, 1386 and 1476 along the way. Joe Revai (1559, St. Laurence) won
both U-1800 and U-1600, defeating a 1646 player in the process. The most
memorable performance among ladies came from Syracuse’s Olga Azarova (1079),
who overcame 1251-, 1308-, 1385- and 1386-rated players to take the U-1400
title.
