Maccabiah Games 2009
Maccabiah Games 2009 - hardcopy application
The Maccabiah Games is the jewel in the Maccabi crown and is referred to as the "Jewish Olympics". They were first held in 1932 in the midst of a worldwide depression. 390 athletes and 14 nations competed, figures similar to the participation in the very first Olympic Games 36 years before. The Maccabiah Games are now the 3rd largest sporting event in the world, after the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games, with 5,000 athletes from 56 countries projected to participate in 2009.
The Maccabiah Games takes place every 4 years in Israel and Team US anticipates taking a delegation of over 1,000 participants, and expects to have a further 1,000 family and friends travel to Israel. The interest levels for this event are unique, with most members of our community knowing someone who will take part.
Israel
Israel is at the heart of the Maccabi ethos and remains central to all the work that Maccabi does. The Maccabiah Games is seen as an essential ingredient as participants will come away from Israel having experienced a cultural and spiritual part of the Games, as well as having a great sporting experience. Visit maccabiah.com for information and background about the games.
Table-Tennis
Team USA is looking to take a team of 4 or 5 male participants to compete in the table-tennis event at the 2009 games. Previous winners have included players ranked in the top 50 in the world.
