Review by rA Octopus 3 (PS 08/89) by Charles Uzzell-Edwards |
This may be the best of the series and perhaps one that compares favourably with a range of FAX releases. I almost certainly detected elements of Aphex Twin in here but you wouldn't be able to say that that is its overall style. In common with parts one and two there are a number of experimental doodles but it it's the more upbeat, coherent and vibe filled tracks that take precedence this time (some might say about time!).
Song for a mutant and On the Mountain are both emotive yet low key pieces that act as a kind of ambient introduction to the disc. Warm twinkling notes and deep sub-bass movements form the backdrop to Bass Drum Test (1-5) with slow kicking bass drums overlaying the deep sounds in five different patterns, I liked this one a lot for its slow purposeful pace and the voice which announces each 'level'.
Glue Sniffing Beats pits funky beats against a simple ditty played on what sounds a little bit like an organ. Perhaps the most exciting track is the last, A Mile Away, which re-introduces that long lost master Daniel Pemberton. A classic closing track with almost Eastern style percussion, beautiful stuff.
