Know Your Own Game
By Carl Danner
The single hardest thing for any player is to have an objective appreciation of what his or her own game really involves -- including your genuine weaknesses and shortcomings, which we all have. How you imagine yourself playing is seldom how others see you. Usually, their view is more accurate than yours. The key to this is your ears. Feel free to ask other players about your own strengths and weaknesses, and really listen to what they have to say. Of course, you don't have to take every word as gospel, but by the time several players have told you something similar, there's probably something to it. Understanding what you really can and can't do will help your match tactics, and offer a better path to improvement (if that's your goal).
You might also notice who seems the happiest about their games. Often it's older players with a defined style they know well, and accept. Playing this sport is supposed to make us happy, isn't it?
