Aditya Sareen and Mendy Wang captured the 2026 Northeast Regional Championships singles titles over the weekend at Westchester Table Tennis Center. The two headlined a tournament that was mostly dominated by the region’s top American seeds.
Several event favorites converted their status into championship performances across multiple divisions, a defining theme of the tournament. However, men’s singles turned out a little differently this year.
Sareen secured his first men’s singles championship with a 3-1 victory over longtime Westchester standout Kai Zhang, marking another milestone in his rapid rise within the sport.
Both players had crossed paths repeatedly in Northeast events in recent years, setting up a highly anticipated final between two of the region’s most consistent contenders.
Zhang, the defending Northeast champion, started strong by taking the opening game, but Sareen responded with poise. After dropping the first game, he relied heavily on his backhand to keep Zhang moving and close out the match in four games.
Staying true to the initial theme, top seed Mendy Wang secured the women’s singles title over Evelyn Ma. Wang lived up to expectations with a composed and efficient run throughout the knockout stage.
Her performance confirmed her position among the top female players competing in the country. Since returning to table tennis this year, Wang has already climbed into the top eight of the U.S. Women’s rankings.
The regional win also gives her a valuable boost in U.S. National Ranking Points ahead of the second and final adult U.S. National Ranking Tournament in August.
The Northeast Regional Championships remain one of the strongest regional events on the U.S. calendar, regularly featuring nationally ranked competitors across multiple age groups.
Tanish Mamidyala and Emma Yang stood out in the Northeast junior events, capturing two titles each in their respective age categories. Mamidyala took a tightly contested U15 boys final against Evan Dong 3-2 (11-7, 11-6, 8-11, 9-11, 11-7) for his first championship.
The following day, he advanced to the U17 boys final, where he won his second title by defeating Charles Shen 3-1 to cap his impressive tournament run.
Also securing two championships, Emma Yang clinched the U13 and U15 girls’ singles categories as the top seed. Her victory in the U13 final came against Adela Huang 3-2 (8-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-2, 11-5) after she took control in the final two games to seal the match.
Yang later added her second championship in U15 girls’ singles against Evelyn Ma, winning 3-1.
Ma may not have won any events, but she did put together a spectacular tournament. She was one of the busiest and most successful competitors at the regionals. She reached the finals in U15, U17 and women’s singles.
Other notable championship performances include Daryl Tsao claiming the U19 boys’ singles title and Lilian Ma taking first place in U19 girls’ singles.
