US National Team Takes Home a Total of 41 Medals from Elite Age Level Event in Cuenca, Ecuador
(Colorado Springs, CO – October 25, 2021) – USA Table Tennis extends congratulations to the members of the US National U-13 and U-11 Teams for their tremendous success at the recently completed 2021 ITTF Pan Am Youth Championships in Cuenca, Ecuador. The US Team took home a total of 41 medals, which included winning the Gold Medal in nine of the fourteen events held at this elite international tournament. The US Girls U-13 and U-11 Teams were spectacular, taking both the Gold and Silver in the Teams portion of the event, and Tashiya Piyadasa had a break-out performance claiming four Gold Medals.
“We’re all so proud to have been part of our U11 and U13 national team members on their first international table tennis competition,” said Team Leader Daniel Rutenberg. “All of our players significantly improved their technical and tactical skills in such a short term to adjust to the altitude and be able to perform at the highest performance level ever. I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity to have led the US Delegation of 37 people, including 16 players, 4 national coaches with rich international experience, and 16 parents at the first Pan American Championships for players at these ages.”
The U-13 American girls, who were led by Coach Wei Qi, set the tone of the tournament with a clean sweep of the medals in the Singles Event, as Yishiuan Lin took the Gold, while Amber Liu bagged the Silver and Aria Shi and Mandy Yu shared the Bronze. Those two, Shi and Yu, paired up and jumped to the top of the group by snagging Gold in the U-13 Girls’ Doubles event. All four girls struck again in the U-13 Teams Event with Liu and Lin combining to capture the Gold and Shi and Yu teaming up to take home the Silver.
The U-13 Boys, under the guidance of Coach Larry Hodges, also grabbed Gold in the Doubles Event as Krish Gandhi and Xianyao He joined up to take the top slot. Stanley Hsu and Mu Du snagged the Silver in the U-13 Boys Team Event, while Hsu teamed up with Yishiuan Lin to reach the finals and snag Silver in the U-13 Mixed Doubles Event.
The US Girls were just as good in the U-11 age group, as the team took three of the four available medals in the U-11 Girls Singles with Tashiya Piyadasa taking one of what would prove to be four Gold Medals for her, while Geetha Krishna and Tiana Piyadasa each battled her way to the semi-finals and ended up with a Bronze. Tashiya Piyadasa teamed up with Geetha Krishna to claim Gold in the Girls U-11 Doubles but they had to defeat the US Team of Tiana Piyadasa and Abigail Yu, who would be awarded Silver Medals, in the finals.
The U-11 Girls were just as good as the U-13 Girls when it came to the Teams Events, as well, as Tashiya Piyadasa picked up another Gold when she team up with Geetha Krishna to take the top slot, while Tiana Piyadasa and Abigail Yu once again made it to the finals, but had to settle for Silver.
The U-11 Boys, who were led by Coach Qiumars Hedayatian, showed that the US has some young male players on the rise, as Kyler Chen and Maxim Mouchinski shared the Bronze the Singles Event, while Chen teamed up with Kef Noorani to grab Gold in the Doubles Event, and teammates Mouchinski and Brian Wu made it to the semi-finals and captured the Bronze. In the Teams Event, Brian Wu and Maxim Mouchinski made it to the finals and took home the Silver. The Boys and Girls teamed up for some big wins in the Mixed Doubles event in the U-11 age category, as Kef Noonan and Tiasha Piyadasa snagged Gold but they had to beat the US duo of Maxim Mouchinski and Abigail Yu to do it, while Kyler Chen and Tiana Piyadasa won Bronze.
“This was an incredible experience for the kids,” said Coach Hedayatian. “Most of these young athletes were playing in their first international tournament. I’m very proud of how our kids adjusted to the altitude and new environment quickly and performed at such a high level.”
