(Colorado Springs, CO – September 26, 2022) – USA Table Tennis (“USATT”) today opened registration for the 2022 US Open Table Tennis Championships, which will be held at Ontario Convention Center in Ontario, California, on December 16 – 21, 2022. The premier international event in the United States, the “Open in Ontario” will offer some 118 different events over six days of competition and will mark the first time in the 91 years of playing the US Open that USATT has hosted a major event in this Southern California inland region, which is known for wide variety of family friendly activities and its close proximity to breath-taking mountains and the vaunted Pacific coast.

“We’re extremely excited with the full slate of events offered at this year’s US Open,” said USATT Chief Executive Officer Virginia Sung. “It is very important that we offer the largest number of possible options for all who are interested in participating in this classic international competition. But our tournament management team is also dedicated to ensuring that the tournament runs smoothly and on time. We think our participants are going to really enjoy the Ontario area, particularly the modern, clean and bright feel of the Convention Center venue. And, of course, we’re hoping for some great Southern California December weather as well.”

The 2022 US Open offers thirty-one open and age-group singles events, including the prestigious Men’s and Women’s Singles titles. The reigning US Open Men’s Singles Champion Kou Lei put on an impressive performance on his way to the claiming the championship at the 2021 US Open in Las Vegas. Fans may also have the opportunity to watch US Olympian Lily Zhang undertake an effort to claim her third consecutive Women’s US Open title. One would expect competition to be high at this year’s event with $10,000 first place prize money at stake for the Women and Men.

The 2022 US Open will also offer thirty-four different doubles events, including age group doubles that start as young as Under-11 and go all the way to the Over-80 Division for Men and Women. Ten different levels of ratings events for both Adults and Juniors should offer plenty of opportunity for fair competition amongst players of all ages and calibers. The Open in Ontario also offers seven events for national and international Para Athletes, including doubles competition for both seated and standing players. There are also fifteen different “classic events” offered for players who want to try their hand at the hardbat and/or sandpaper game. And, as with the 2022 US Nationals, USATT has paired with our good friends at PingPongParkinson to offer a wide range of events for players who are living with a Parkinson diagnosis.

“We’ve worked hard with our competition managers, Gorazd Vecko and Tomas Varga, to develop the widest possible offering of events that can be completed within a manageable time schedule,” said Tournament Director Michael Babuin. “As with this summer’s US Nationals, we take our responsibility to run the tournament in a timely and orderly fashion very seriously; but we also want to make sure that all persons – nationally and internationally – have an opportunity to play all of the events that have fostered their love for the sport all of these years.”
