COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The main draws for the 2025 U.S. Smash are underway in Las Vegas, Nevada and four Americans have advanced through the opening rounds. The competition will prove to be difficult as the tournament hosted by World Table Tennis brings together the top table tennis talent from around the world.
As it stands, Jessica Reyes-Lai and Amy Wang advanced for the U.S. into the second round of the women’s singles main draw. American duo Nandan Naresh and Sally Moyland have reached the mixed doubles round of 16 and there will be more opportunities for U.S. players to advance on day two in men’s singles, men's doubles and women’s doubles.
Women’s Singles: Reyes-Lai and Wang Advance
In the round of 64, 21-year-old Jessica Reyes-Lai (USA) of Washington state earned the first American win in women's singles. She defeated Filippa Bergand (SWE) in a tightly contested 3-2 match (9-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 13-11). After trailing two games to one, Reyes-Lai displayed composure under pressure, taking the final two games by narrow margins. She now faces world No. 6 Hima Harimoto (JPN) in the round of 32.
Also advancing is Amy Wang, who defeated fellow U.S. Olympian Lily Zhang 4-1 (12-10, 6-11, 11-5, 11-4). The two have traded wins in U.S. tournaments over the years, and this match was no exception in intensity. Wang controlled the match after dropping the second game to fend off her opponent. Wang now moves on to face Jia Nan Yuan (FRA).
Mixed Doubles: Naresh and Moyland Pull Off Comeback
In mixed doubles, Nandan Naresh and Sally Moyland (USA) staged an impressive comeback against fellow wildcards Liam Pitchford (GBR) and Anna Hursey (WLS). After dropping the first two games, the American pair surged back to win the next three and take the match 3-2 (7-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-7). They will face the Japanese duo of Sora Matsushima and Miwa Harimoto in the next round.
Meanwhile, Amy Wang and Bosman Botha (USA) were eliminated in the round of 32 by Romania’s Eduard Ionescu and Bernadette Szocs, who won the match 3-1.
Men’s Singles: Jha Falls in Tight Battle
Top American men’s player Kanak Jha fell in the opening round to San Su Lee (KOR) in a competitive five-game match. Jha, a three-time Olympian, came back from a 0-2 deficit to level the score but ultimately lost 3-2 (11-8, 12-10, 5-11, 9-11, 11-4). The rest of the U.S. men who received host wildcard slots will continue play on July 7.
