Amy Wang Takes Gold at Pan Am Championships in Havana, Cuba
by Barbara Wei
A cool-headed Amy Wang (USA WR #68) prevailed against Adriana Diaz (PUR WR#13) and Bruna Takahashi (BRA WR#37) in nail biting encounters in the semi-finals and finals of the Women’s Singles to clinch the championship title. Amy, seeded 4th, prevailed over the higher seeded players in her usual cool-headed, all business, fashion.
In the semi-final encounter against reigning champion and Puerto Rican super star Adriana Diaz, Amy went down 1-3 in the best of 7 match, but then won 3 games in a row, winning 11-9 in the 7th, to lock her place in the final. The final against Bruna Takahashi also went to the full distance, with 4 of the 7 games being decided by only two points. In the end, Amy was able to take the title 12-10 in the 7th and claim her first Pan Am Championship title.
Lily Zhang (USA WR #31), defending silver medalist, sailed through until the semi-final, where she fell to Bruna Takahashi 1-4. Rachel Sung (USA WR #243) and Sally Moyland (USA WR #188) finished in the top 16 and top 32, losing to Bruna and Adriana, respectively.
